My name is Nikisha Patel, also known as Niki. I am proud to be the Care Branch Manager at the first Mayfield village, in Watford. I’m passionate about supporting people to live well and Mayfield Villages offers the facilities, services and community to enable them to do so in a beautiful and convenient location. In my spare time I enjoy travelling, gardening and spending quality time with my family and friends.
How long have you been working in the social care industry?
I have worked within the care industry for around 18 years, in various settings. During this time I have enhanced my work experience through various courses in leadership and management, gaining my QCF Level 5 in Leadership and Management in Social Care.
Throughout my career I have successfully contributed to supporting many people to live independently and safely whilst enjoying a great quality of life within their community - this aspect of my job is what motivates and drives me!
What inspired you to pursue a career in care?
At university, I studied Psychology and Health Studies, focusing on ‘Delivering excellence within health and social care’ in my final year, so I knew from then I wanted a career within this industry. During this time I also cared for an incredible woman living with MS from whom I learnt so much about the complexities of caring for someone living with a life changing condition.
It was a few years later, after witnessing the poor quality of care my grandmother with dementia received, I felt compelled to contribute to improving the quality of care for others - one person at a time - by providing truly personalised support.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Getting to know the small, yet important things which make us unique individuals, it’s really important for me to understand people’s hobbies, likes/dislikes and then incorporating these into the support we provide to make every visit and interaction meaningful.
Another part of my job I love is supporting people to achieve their personal goals, this applies to both my clients and team.
What levels of care will be available to property owners at Mayfield Watford?
Mayfield Care offers non-medical support, which includes a range of services from housekeeping, laundry, shopping, assistance with medication and companionship to end of life care.
What excites you about the opening of Mayfield’s first care branch?
I’m most looking forward to getting to know our owners and to learn more about their lives. I want to be the ‘go-to’ person at the village for any services to enable our owners to live a fun, relaxing and stress-free life. A big part of that is capturing feedback, which I’m looking forward to discussing with the owners.
What characteristics do you need as a carer?
To be personable, empathetic, respectful, trustworthy and reliable.
Thank you Niki, we look forward to the lasting impression you'll make on the Mayfield community.
